Explanation for answers to quiz on the need for a spawn-inducing pheromone:

Chemicals are cheaper and more reliable.  Not actually.  While the first may be true, not all oysters respond equally to all artificial spawn-inducers. 

Males and female oysters can be induced to spawn separately.  Yes.  This is important if pure gametes are required, say, from one or other sex for selective breeding purposes.

Allows induction of spawning without risk of introducing pathogens.  Yes.

Allows for simplification and standardisation of oyster-hatchery operation.  Yes.  A method of inducing spawning that is “100% guaranteed” is highly desirable.
